Description
- AN 18K YELLOW GOLD AUTOMATIC SWEEP SECONDS WRISTWATCH WITH DATECIRCA 1971 REF 1680 SUBMARINER
- Gold
- diameter 39 mm
• cal. 1570 automatic nickel lever movement, 26 jewels • black dial, applied dagger, dot and baton indexes, luminescent Mercedes-style hands, sweep center seconds, magnified aperture for date at 3 o'clock • rotating faded black bezel calibrated for 60 units, screw-down crown with protective shoulders, screw back • case, dial and movement signed
Condition
The movement is running at the time of cataloguing, however it may require service soon. The dial shows no visible imperfections. The finish to the bezel has aged very slightly with some light fading and there appears to be some excess glue on top of and around the luminescent dot. Otherwise, the case shows light surface scuffs and some slight 'dings' to the top edges of the lugs. These are minimal and the one at the edge of the lower left lug is the most visible.
The strap of this watch contains endangered species; please see Important Notices for further information.

Catalogue Note
This model, Ref. 1680, was launched in 1966 as the first Submariner model to feature a date aperture.
In the 1970s, Rolex produced Submariners in both stainless steel and yellow gold, which was somewhat uncommon for sport model watches. Only the GMT-Master, the Cosmograph Daytona and the present model were available in gold or stainless steel at this time. Today, these are very collectible as there are fewer of these gold Submariners than their steel counterparts.
