• gilt verge movement • white enamel dial • gilt engraved cuvette • case with translucent light blue enamel on a fine guilloché background, enamel cartouche to the centre depicting the coat of arms of Courteney and the Devon family, both bezels with dark blue translucent enamel and gilt paillons • cuvette signed and numbered, dial signed Gregson Hor. du Roy • associated pearl-set chatelaine with white and blue enamel links

Condition

The movement is not running and would benefit from a complete overhaul. Some parts of the mechanism are loose. Dial with some dirt and spotted. Bezel to the front cover in good condition. Back cover with an area of enamel missing to the bezel, light scratches to the translucent part. Cartouche with coat of arms faded and with scratches. Some areas of enamel missing to the chatelaine.

Catalogue Note

This present watch represents the marriage between two of the oldest families in England. The arms are those of Lady Charlotte Courteney, daughter of William 8th Earl of Devon, 2nd Viscount Courtenay and his wife Frances Clack. These arms are intertwined with those of her husband Thomas Giffard 23rd of Chillington married on the 23rd June 1788.
