 • eccentric and small nickel lever movement, 15 jewels, mono-metallic compensation balance • eccentric stylised oval silvered dial, Roman numerals, outer minute track • engraved initials to the lower half of the case, hinged back with fine painted polychrome enamel portrait of an Ottoman Gentleman, possibly Ürgüplü Mustafa Hayri Efendi (1867- 1921), signed E.V. 1914 • case numbered, dial and movement signed

Condition

The movement is running at the time of cataloguing, however it might benefit from a service in the near future. Dial with some discoloration to the edges. Case with light scuffs. Enamel with some light scuffs but overall in good condition. Overall in very nice condition.

Catalogue Note

Urguplu Mustafa Hayri Efendi (1867-1921) was Sheikh ul-Islam  (The Chief religious official in the Ottoman Empire) between 1914-1916 as well as a politician.
After attending different Medreses he studied law in Bursa. He started his career at the Ministry of Justice, where he served in different functions until the 2nd Constitutional Monarchy. In 1908 he became deputy of Nigde and entered Parliament. 
His misunderstanding with Talat Pacha played a role in his disengagement from his position as Sheikh ul-Islam. He served as Ministre of Justice during Sultan Mehmet VI Vahdetin’s reign. After World War One, he was exiled to Malta during the occupation of Istanbul.
