Catalogue Note

Nikolai Fechin’s portraits make up a significant part of his diverse oeuvre. Throughout the artist's extensive travels across Siberia, Bali and the American Southwest, Fechin painted the faces of friends, colleagues and the people he encountered with graceful intimacy. Portraits of children were especially prominent throughout Fechin’s repertoire, and he effectively captured the innocence, sentimentality and wary maturity of each of his young sitters through use of a brilliant colour palette and bold textures.
