Catalogue Note

A comparable mirror back depicting The Prayer to Juno in the Musée du Louvre, Paris is signed FL (no. MR 2625, see Baratte 2000: p. 385). It is on the basis of comparison to that example that several similar unsigned mirror backs depicting mythological scenes are attributed to François I. Limosin.  Particularly close to the present lot are two in the Musée du Louvre: Orpheus before Pluto and Persephone (no. MR 2626, Baratte op. cit.) and Venus and Cupid (no. MR R 205, Baratte op. cit.).  Another depicting Diana and Callisto is in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, (no. M.11-1938).
