Condition

Chipping and surface abrasions throughout. Flaking and losses to paint. Hairline crack through center of relief. Restorations throughout, including surface consolidation and refreshed paint. Repaired breaks to both top corners and at top center (around hole from a previous mounting). Chipping, worming, losses, and abrasions to frame, which is composed of some early elements.

Catalogue Note

The present relief is a version of the popular 15th century type known as the Madonna of the Candelabra, which is thought to be based upon a lost marble original by Antonio Rossellino of 1460-65.
