Catalogue Note

The composition illustrating frolicking putti with a floral chain is repeated on a bronze relief cast by ThiĆ©baut et Fils after 1900 only known from photographs and catalogued as "after Clodion".  There is no documented sculpture by Clodion of this subject although the general theme is repeated throughout his career. Poulet and Scherf (op. cit.) note the multitude of images ascribed to Clodion and refer to the physical types and draperies on the bronze as perhaps more "Clodionesque".
