Description

  • Jacopo Fabris
  • View of the Pantheon, Rome
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas has an old stable relining, the original surface finishes approximately half an inch from the sight edge on the left hand side. There is a very faint stretcher mark on the upper edge. The paint surface overall is in very good condition. Upon very close examination a pentimento is visible, showing the intention at one time for the pediment of the Pantheon to have extended one inch further to the left. Inspection under UV reveals scattered minor retouches throughout and infilled losses to the sky. Certain areas, including the architecture along the left hand edge, the windows in the Pantheon and the roof of the building upper right fluoresce green though it is unclear whether this is due to the varnish. Offered in a carved gilt wood frame.

Catalogue Note

The composition is very close to a work, formerly ascribed to Canaletto, in the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest (see  W.G.  Constable, Canaletto, Oxford 1989, vol. II, cat. no. 391, reprocuded vol. I, Plate 206).  On the portico of the Pantheon can be seen the two campanili erected in the 17th century by Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) and removed in the late 19th century.
