Description

  • François de Troy
  • Portrait of a Lady
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Anonymous sale, Paris, Tajan, 19 December 2007, lot 28.

Condition

The canvas is relined and the paint surface is clean and presentable under a slightly shiny varnish with good retention of detail and strong coloration. The surface has been slightly pressed in the relining process. Inspection under UV light reveals a series of compound tears and punctures in the lower half, particularly toward the left and to the lower left corner into the center and to the hand holding the flowers. There is another repaired tear to the chest. There is scattered retouching to the background and edges. The face is generally good with only small areas of repaint to fill the craquelure and a spot in the hair. For the most part these restorations are well applied and the painting can be hung as is. Offered in an elaborated carved wood frame.
