Condition

Recent glue relining is firm and stable. under a thick, shiny varnish. the paint surface has been pressed for the most part and there are scattered abrasions, most noticealby in background areas. there are numerous old repairs scattered that are visible to naked eye on close inspection. Some of these include two verticle repaired tears at upper right corner, another crudely repaired tear in sky to left of columns, and some reworkings in upper left corner. overall, the composition still reads well and colors are strong. under ultraviolet: there are extensive retouches evenly distributed throughout. canvas may have been rolled at some point as many of the retouches are in the form of vertical lines of repaint. the condition of the painting has clearly suffered, and many of the old repairs and retouches could be more skillfully redone. Offered in a wood frame with elaborately carved and gilt scroll pattern on red ground.
