Florentine School, late 15th Century

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This work has probably been lightly cleaned and retouched fairly recently, although it seems to have a noticeable patina which has been retained, and it has very conspicuously been left unvarnished. This approach provides a more "fresco" feeling which is very attractive. The retouches are serviceable and while some corrections could be made, the general feeling of the painting is very presentable as is. There are fairly significant retouches in the sky on the left side which seem to constitute a recreation of the patina more than anything else. In the remainder of the painting there are carefully applied spots of retouching in isolated areas, but it is a work which has lasted well and which has been thoughtfully restored.
