Description

  • A Diptych: The Annunciation
  • both, oil on panel in engaged frames

Condition

This diptych is comprised of two separate pieces of wood carved with engaged frames. The paint layer appears stable with no lifting or major losses. Some of the areas of gilding have been retouched, but the flesh tones are in a nice state of preservation. UV light reveals small scattered retouches in the upper portions of the compositions but these are minor and not disturbing to the naked eye.

Catalogue Note

The present Annunciation is by an as yet unidentified German artist. More specifically, it appears to be by a hand working in the lower Rhenish region, possibly Westphalia. It is reminiscent of the anonymous Master of Liesborn, whose Annunciation in his eponymous altarpiece (London, National Gallery), shares with the present picture similar soft facial features and rounded faces. An interesting iconographic element is the placement of the Virgin to the left of the angel Gabriel, a rare feature in painted depictions of the Annunciation.
