Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This triptych is in very healthy state. The right hand panel shows a thin crack running vertically; the central panel has a few spots in the sky that could be retouched and the left hand panel has a few spots immediately to the right of the king's head, which are visible. Although the painting is slightly dirty and yellowed with an old varnish, it is not necessary in our opinion to clean the painting. However, if the painting were to be cleaned, only a few retouches will be removed, none of which are currently visible under ultraviolet light. The condition seems to be very good.

Catalogue Note

An old photo-certificate from W.R. Valentiner, dated 21 February 1939, states that "The painting reproduced in this photo is in my opinion the work of a master of the Brussels School, close to B. van Orley and executed about 1530.  It is in unusually fine state of preservation."
