Condition
Casket (big size): The casket is in good condition overall with some transformation and later replacements. The finely sculpted lid with marquetry inlay appears to be intact with a few minor losses. The wooden frame appears to have been added later. Some of the bone plaques, and the feet probably replaced.

Catalogue Note
L'Atelier des Embriachi fondé par Baldassare degli Embriachi (ou Ubriachi) originaire de Gênes, fut actif en Italie du Nord et à Venise au courant du XVe siècle. Caractéristiques de la bottega sont ces coffrets ornés de plaques rectangulaires en haut relief, légèrement bombées, en ivoire ou os, insérées dans un encadrement en marqueterie de bois, à la certosina. Le coffret présenté ici en est un bel exemple de grande taille dont la frise montre un couple d'amoureux. Le couvercle, soigneusement travaillé en marqueterie, présente deux Génies ailés tenant un écusson, destiné à recevoir les armoiries des mariés.
