Catalogue Note
The present lot is based on a pair of candelabra made by Paul de Lamerie in 1731-32 for Sir Robert Walpole, 1st Earl of Orford (1676-1745), one of the earliest known English-made candelabra. The Lamerie candelabra is currently part of the Gilbert Collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and is illustrated Timothy Schroder, The Gilbert Collection of Gold and Silver, 1988, cat. no. 50, pp. 204-6.
