Catalogue Note
Renato Signorini (1908-99) was a sculptor and mosiac artist who taught at the Fine Arts Academy of Ravenna. This sculpture of the newly-crowned Queen Elizabeth II was the highlight of his exhibition at the O'Hana Gallery in London in 1956. This was recorded in a Pathé newsreal, which noted that the sculpture was "made of silver 1/4 inch think, covered in a layer of gold 1/8 inch thick, and set with 103 emeralds, sapphires, pearls, rubies, and lapis-lazuli... even melted down, it would be worth more than £6,000." The figure of the Queen was probably included in his one-man show of 45 works at Tiffany's, New York in October of that year, which displayed Signorini's gold and silver sculptures of Audrey Hepburn and Pope Pius XII.
