Catalogue Note

This documentary box shows the dexterity of Jacques Frédéric Kirstien of Strasbourg, 1765-1838 (established in 1795).  Protected under glass, the scenes retain the original freshness of this high relief detailed chasing.  For further examples of his work see the catalogue Deux siècles d'orfèvrerie à Strasbourg, 2004, No.134, 137-41, 153-54.
A. Kenneth Snowman illustrates a box from the English Royal Collection by John Northam, London, 1813, mounted with a panel of a lion attacking a horse signed Kirstein Strasbourg, see Eighteenth Century Gold Boxes of Europe, 1966, pls. 486-488, p. 111.
