Description

  • Silver
  • diameter 9 3/4 in.

circular with applied gadrooned rims, the borders engraved with arms flanked by angel supporters under a bishop's mitre

Provenance

The arms on one side are those of the Bishopric of Raphoe impaling Beresford quartering la Poer, the latter field wrongly colored or instead of argent. The arms on the other side are those of Beresford quartering la Poer probably for William Beresford, 3rd son of Marcus Beresford, Earl of Tyrone and brother of the 1st Marquess of Waterford, bishop of Dromore 1780, Ossory 1782 and archbishop of Tuam 1794, created  1st Baron Decies 1812. He does not appear to have taken up the position of bishop of Raphoe.
