Condition

Bird figures slightly loose. Patinated bronze with light rubbing and surface dirt. One figure with small shallow dent to one shoulder. Ormolu with light rubbing, oxidation and heavy surface dirt; should enhance with cleaning. In good condition.

Catalogue Note

A basically identical version of these unusually large and fine chenets is in the collection of Pavlovsk Palace, Saint Petersburg (Inv. 1199/1200-IV). These are surmounted with the same figures as the present chenets but with their tied garments executed in ormolu. The pair is attributed to Pierre-Philippe Thomire and dated circa 1785-90. The palace also possesses a pair of similar chenets made entirely of ormolu, see Emmanuel Ducamp ed., Pavlovsk: The Collections, Paris, 1993, p/ 193, fig. 46 and p. 222.
