Catalogue Note

The polychrome stylized tree depicted in the mihrab of this rug is very similar to that on a Mudjar prayer rug sold in these rooms, June 1, 2006, lot 120.  In the present lot the tree has ascending leafy branches while those of the Mudjar cited were descending.  In palette,  the two rugs also share the variety of clear, vibrant color that are characteristic to Central Anatolian village rugs.  It is in the border pattern that this rug differs from the Mudjar example, having a star-filled octagon design most often found in Konya or Karapinar examples.
