Catalogue Note

William, 8th Duke of Brunswick (1806-1844) was the second son of the Black Duke of Brunswick, and at his death a ward of the Prince Regent of England.  His elder brother succeeded as duke, but was deposed by the Revolution of 1830; William stepped in as Regent, then from 1831 as Duke of Brunswick.  He ruled the Duchy until his death in 1884, when the senior branch of the House of Guelph became extinct.
