comprising: Teapot, Creamer, Sugar Bowl and two-handled Tray, of globular form, boldly chased in high relief with dragons and with dragon-head spouts and finials, engraved with initials WP,  the circular tray engraved in the center with a presentation inscriptions in English and Japanese flanked by floral sprigs and a rising sun, the border with large dragons, thier tails forming the handles

Catalogue Note

The presentation inscription reads: "This Tea, Coffee Set and Salver Presented by Asano Soichiro Esquire Merchant of Tokoyo Japan To William Pitts Esquire Superintendent Engineer for the Rising Sun Petroleum Co. Ltd. On His Retirement from the Above Company as a Token of Esteem and Respect for his Integrity after 12 Years Connection in Business, 1893-1905."

Asano Soichiro (1848-1930) was a Japanese businessman who founded the the Asano Cement Company in 1883.  By 1929 his business had expanded to comprise 17 companies, 26 subsidiaries, and 26 affiliates, including shipping and shipbuilding, mining, gas and electricity, oil, iron and steel, and beer brewing companies.
