Worked in silk, hair, and paint on gauze over linen with a ribbon border; signed Mary Ann Lucy Gries a daughter of John and Rosina Gries... and made this sampler in Marietta in Mrs Buchanans School in the year of our Lord 1826.

Some foxing and minor stain; colors good; green ribbon vivid with small break at bottom; frame not original.

Catalogue Note

This is one of six known examples to name Mrs. Buchanan's school. She was Catharine Welshans (1792-1852), the wife of James Galbraith Buchanan (1784-1848).
