Catalogue Note

The frame is backed with the Providence Gazette of May 12, 1804. Typical of early memorials from Mary Balch's school in Providence are the satin-stitched willow leaves, the fully embroidered figure, and a total absence of paint or ink.  Abigail Dean (1789-1854) was the daughter of Calvin Dean (c. 1764-1856) and Esther Beverly (c. 1760-1818). Dean was a Providence tanner and currier who became very wealthy.  Abby died unmarried.
