Catalogue Note

John and Myles Brockbank were among the pioneers of chronometer making. Myles was admitted to the Clockmakers' Company in 1776 and John in 1779. Peto was one of their principle workmen.

Peto, who was a pupil of Earnshaw devised the cross detent. Peto's intention was to improve upon Arnold's detent escapement. The cross detent locks the wheel with the detent spring in tension instead of compression.

Gideon Levingston, inventor, master goldsmith and clockmaker currently lives in France. In 2006 he produced hand made wristwatch cases for the independent watchmaker Karl Voutilainen.

See Clutton &Daniels, Watches, p. 282 for a discussion of Peto’s cross detent and his collaboration with Brockbanks.
