foliate engraved gilt dial with subsidiary seconds and up/down dials, signed in a cartouche John Roskell Junr, Late Robt Roskell & Son, Liverpool, 1287/56795, similarly signed six pillar three train fusee and chain movement with Earnshaw's spring detent chronometer escapement, bi-metallic balance with blued helical spring mounted on a platform finely engraved with foliate scrolls, striking the quarters on two coiled gongs and the hours on a further gong, the moulded multi-piece case with bevel-glazed panels and richly engraved with foliate scrolls

Dial in good condition. Movement is complete but oil is very dry and is much in need of a clean. Case has some rubbing to gilding on corners but otherwise very good throughout. With winder.

John Roskell is recorded as working at 21 Church Street Liverpool between 1852 and 1856. He had previously been in business with his father, Robert Roskell as R & J Roskell and Roskell & Son between 1805 and 1848.  Known as a watch and chronometer maker, John Roskell is also recorded as having been a maker of horological machinery. This very fine carriage clock was almost certainly made as an exhibition piece.  The fractional serial number denotes individual and total production of chronometers.
