Catalogue Note
The present lot is amongst the earliest know surviving quarter repeaters made by Thomas Tompion. In 1938 it was considered to be the earliest known surviving Tompion repeating watch, see H. Maryat, Watches, Vol.1, 1938 where it states that the Tompion repeater no. 150 is "the earliest surviving Tompion watch". H. Maryat's granddaughter, Julie, married George Daniels in 1964.
Tompion is known to have made some 400 repeating watches. The earliest recorded is no. 63 which is part of the Ilbert Collection at the British Museum; another example no. 144 formerly in the Time Museum was sold at Sotheby's, New York, June 19th 2002, lot 1.
For a detailed description and a drawing of Tompion's early repeating work, see, G.H. Baillie Watches, 1929, pp. 307-322, pl. LXX
