'To Our Friend George Daniels From Omega Ltd. April 30, 1999'
Omega launched the Co-Axial watch in Basel in 1999; it was an impressive occasion one which Dr. Daniels enjoyed very much for all the praise and adulation he received. At the end of the proceedings Omega's President at the time, Mr Sofisti presented Dr. Daniels with the first production Co-Axial watch numbered 000/999 (the present lot). In his speech Mr Sofisti implied that together, Omega and Daniels had taken on the near impossible by combining their practical ability founded upon 150 years of manufacture, and Daniels technical genius to produce this remarkable contribution designed to carry the mechanical watch into the twenty-first century. During his speech Dr. Daniels pointed out that the Co-Axial was fashionably cleaner than the quartz watch simply because it had no need of batteries or electricity and therefore neither polluted nor consumed the environment.
Dr. Daniels was also very excited to be introduced to Eugene Cernan, the last man to walk on the surface of the moon, at Basel who was also there for Omega wearing the Omega watch he wore during his moon walk. Dr. Daniels described Gene Cernan as a most congenial man who made conversation easy while they were being interviewed and photographed by journalists. Both were photographed together with the watches and on the moon buggy which Eugene Cernan drove into the fair on with Nicholas Hyack.
