- A German gold and enamel snuff box, maker's mark FJ, circa 1798
- gold, enamel
- 8.6cm, 3 3/8 in wide
rectangular with cut corners, the lid painted with a circular medallion of Clio, the muse of History, holding a tablet inscribed: History and dated Juil 5 / 1798 against translucent sunrays, on a striped guilloché ground within a border of enamel roundels, French prestige marks including maker's mark FJ, the rim numbered: 4638

slight loss to enamel border near hinge at the back,

Catalogue Note
As nothing of historical significance took place on 5 July 1798 apart from Napoleon's capture of Alexandria during the Battle of the Nile and a decree being passed in Paris to reward those who denounced émigrés, it must be assumed that this was the date the box was painted. If this is so it is enormously helpful in dating the plentiful boxes made by this so far unidentified goldsmith.
