Catalogue Note
A monumental work on the paintings found at Pompeii. "It was Zahn's particular purpose to reproduce in this work the exact colours of the paintings at Pompeii, which he had, he claimed, recorded faithfully in drawings made on the spot during the course of the great programme of excavations of 1825-1827 and before the atmosphere had had time to destroy their freshness. It is worth noting that, in turning to the very new technique of chromolithography to achieve this end, Zahn foreshadows precisely Owen Jones's more well-known use of the medium for the scientifically accurate reproduction of colour tones" (BAL RIBA).
