Catalogue Note

This work was a sequel to the author's acclaimed Ruins of Palmyra (1753) and if anything was even more successful and influential. The Temple of Venus at Balbec was adopted by Chambers at Kew in 1761 and imitated more exactly by Flitcroft at Stourhead. This French edition appeared around the same time as the English edition. They are sometimes described as having 47 plates when plate no. III is bound as two separate parts (here it is joined).
