Small 4to (198 x 149mm.), elaborate architectural title in grey wash over pencil, 27 fine watercolours over pencil of funerary monuments and tombs etc. each within pen and ink double-ruled border and 8 architectural pencil drawings on tracing paper loosely tipped in, early nineteenth-century green morocco, loosely inserted at a later date (late 19th or 20th century) are 4 sheets of biographical notes on Montferrand and lists of the drawings in this album, preliminary blank and some other leaves becoming detached, a little light scattered spotting and marginal soiling, binding slightly rubbed, corners slightly worn, lacking clasps and catches

Montferrand (1786-1858), was a French neo-classical architect who trained in Paris under Charles Percier, but due to the Napoleonic wars and dearth of new construction in France spent most of his working life in Russia, mainly in St Petersburg. He designed and executed a number of buildings in the city between 1817 and 1858, most notably St Isaac's cathedral and the Alexandrine Column for the square behind the Winter Palace. Drawings by Montferrand are rare at auction.
