Catalogue Note

A rare early issue of this edition, following the first edition of c. 1655. The plates contained in Palazzi di Roma do not correspond exactly with the listings in BAL RIBA. This copy has the plates in a different order (and not necessarily in the same book), and contains one of the plates supposedly only included in the first edition of c. 1655 (Palazzo de SS.ri Caffarelli), and only 3 of the 5 extra plates for this edition (nos 20, 25 and 27 in BAL RIBA's listing), as well as another 5 plates not included in the BAL RIBA descriptions (Il famoso palagio de SS.ri Massimi alla Valle; Palazzo de SS.ri Cenci alla dogana; Palazzo de' Sig.ri d'Aste; Pianta de palazzo de' Sig.ri d'Asti; Palazzo dell Ill.mo Sig Conte Gio. Antonio Bighazzini). The plates in this copy are unnumbered, unlike the BAL RIBA copy, which is presumably the cause of the different order of plates, and have the watermark of the paschal lamb (Heawood 2838, as does the copy in the Sir John Soane's Museum), which indicates that this volume was compiled at an earlier date.
