Catalogue Note

The work is dedicated to Monsieur Blagrove "gentilhomme anglois", "probably a West Indian planter... strictly neo-classical in style... these designs were obviously intended to appeal to the English taste, as well as to provide for the practical requirements of maximum protection from direct sunlight and tropical rainstorms... plenty of ventilation... and resistance to damage by earthquake" (BAL RIBA).
