Description

  • a still life with a watermelon, grapes, pomegranates and other fruits on a ledge
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 16 December 1966, lot 381, as Berentz and as one of a pair, for 340 Guineas, to Leadbeater.

Condition

The canvas has a mid 20th century relining. The paint surface appears in reasonably good condition with the impasto quite well preserved under the oxidised varnish. An old tear of 45 by 30 cm has been repaired centre left. The retouchings here have discoloured and it is visible in the catalogue illustration. All other retouchings and strengthenings, scattered around the painting but mostly confined to the darker tones, are visible to the naked eye as they have discoloured. Removal of the varnish and application of a new one after cleaning would improve the overall tonality. Offered in a dusty, period, carved wooden frame in good condition.
