Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 16 December 1966, lot 381, as Berentz and as one of a pair, for 340 Guineas, to Leadbeater.

Condition

The canvas has an old relining which is a little loose but which has not flattened the paint surface which retains its volume and thick impasto. The thick oxidised varnish means it is easier to read the condition of the work with the naked eye than with UV light: discoloured retouchings can be made out in the darker tones and in the shadows. A small old repaired tear can be seen lower centre. The fruit is well conserved. A new varnish would improve the overall tonality. Offered in a period carved wooden frame in good condition.
