Description

  • Giovanni Battista Salvi, called Sassoferrato
  • the madonna and child
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

A workshop copy after Sassoferrato's original of the same dimensions in the Museo del Prado, Madrid, inv. no. 342 (see F. Macé de Lepinay et al., Giovanni Battista Salvi, "Il Sassoferrato", Milan 1990, p. 72, cat. no. 21, reproduced).

Condition

The canvas has an effective old relining from the mid-late 20th century whcih has not flattened the paint surface. Under the discoloured varnish the paint surface appears as the illustration suggests: the blue tones of the cloak have lost some of their surface and the darker tones lower left are rather sunken. The varnish has oxidised lower right. Otherwise, to the naked eye, the condition looks good. UV light reveals some minor old retouchings. Offered in a carved wooden frame with minor losses in the gilding but structurally sound.
