  • mother of pearl and intarsia on an ebonised wood base

  • Jerusalem, 18th/ 19th century
with Christ, the four Evangelists, the Virgin of Sorrows, the Virgin as the Woman of the Apocalypse, Saint Anthony and an unidentified male saint

inscribed to the front: IN / RI and LENIO DI / GETSEMAN to the reverse: ESTA I - XIV (i.e. fourteen times) and on two detached fragments: S and S. ANTONIO
with two wax seals to the reverse each impressed: JERUSALEM / SIG. P. GUARDIA

Condition

There is dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. A number of the mother of pearl panels on the base at the front and the mother of pearl pinnacle of the cross are detached and some pieces are lost. A number of the mother of pearl panels may be reattached and the left panel with an Evangelist is loose. There are remnants of glue throughout, particularly to the base. The cross may be reattached to the base. There are minor stable splits to the wood consistent with the material. There are two drill holes to the underside of the base and a small hole to the reverse of the base. There are eight small metal pins to the reverse of the cross. There is a piece of wire inserted through two small holes at the top of the cross. Otherwise the condition is good.
