containing items including a cardinal's ceremonial chain, three rosaries, two crucifixes, five necklaces, two religious orders, two reliquaries, a bracelet and a cloak clasp

Condition

The box: There is dirt and wear to the surfaces of the box throughout. Several of the leather panels and the lining underneath are pealing off. One of the metal studs underneath is lost. The joint between the back and bottom panels is open but stable. There are a few minor stable splits to the wood core, consistent with the material. A few of the dividers in the inner shelves are loose or detached. The jewellery (by item): 1) A Cardinal's Ceremonial Chain of gilt metal and enamel, with fluted curb linking. 2) Three Rosaries: One of seeds; one of polished amethyst beads; one of polished garnet beads. 3) Two Crucifixes: one of wood and gilt metal; one with silver applications. 4) Four necklaces: Two of amethyst, metal and glass; one of Carnelian; one of green stone beads. 5) Two Religious orders of metal with silk ribbons (one adorned with pastes). 6) Two reliquaries: One of silver filigree; one of gilt metal with near-colourless and coloured pastes. 7) A Bracelet of hardstones. 8) A Cloak Clasp of gilt metal mounted with garnets and mother of pearl. There is dirt and wear to the jewellery consistent with age and handling, including some tarnishing to some of the metal pieces. Some pieces of jewellery are incomplete. There are a few loose beads.

Catalogue Note

The provenance of these items is purported to relate to Cardinal Emmanuel Theodose De la Tour d'Auvergne Duc de Bouillon (1643-1715) and Cardinal Hugues-Robert-Jean-Charles de la Tour d'Auvergne-Lauraquais(1802-1851), who was ordianed Bishop of Arras in 1802 and became Cardinal on 23 December 1839.
