Condition

Overall good condition; the ormolu with some minor areas of pitting but otherwise appears to have been sympathetically cleaned; the side of one bowel with a restored break.; one cover with a restored break; overall with some rubbing and wear.

Catalogue Note

The present pair of pot pourri belongs to a group of similar pot pourri made in the early 19th century.  A pair with lacquered bodies and stamped Cheney and dated 1809 to the underside of the ormolu stand sold in these rooms, The Collection of Mr. & Mrs. Stephen C. Hilbert, May 24, 2007, lot 97 ($16,800).  The maker of those pot pourri appears to be unrecorded, although a patinated and gilded bronze candlestick with an identical inscription by Cheney is illustrated, Jonathan Bourne and Vanessa Brett, Lighting in the Domestic Interior, 1991, fig. 505, p. 149.  The design for this is taken from a catalogue of similar wares published by G.A. Glick in the early 19th century. (Bourne and Brett, op. cit., fig 404)
