Condition
CONDITION REPORT:
Overall with scratches, dents and cracks as well as traces of old woodworm damage consistant with age and use. Faded Patina in places. Some parts with replacements of later date including the plinths of a later date. Credenza with dry age cracks on top and scratches and dents due to age and use. Some inlaid banding on top missing. One door with cracks. The other door pierced at left corner.

The lot will be available for pick up at Sotheby's and James Bourlet's warehouse after the auction and must be paid for and collected by Tuesday, October 30th, 2012. The purchaser will be responsible for all storage charges incurred after October 30th and the lot will not be released to the purchaser until both Sotheby's and the warehouse are paid in full.

Catalogue Note
This rare refectory, or dining room, is a type that was used in monasteries and academic institutions in Renaissance Italy. Monks ate at the long benches and important officials sat at raised benches at the end of the hall.
The inscriptions carved into the wainscotting of this panelled room are comprised of a series of independent sentences, which, possibly, are quotations from the monastic rule of Saint Augustine. Augustine was a Latin philosopher and theologian from Roman Africa and was generally considered as one of the greatest Christian thinkers of all time. As the original order of these sentences or quotations cannot be determined with certainty, the following is a listing of them:

No record of the name of the woodcarver Tommaso Branchia da Mondaino has been found thus far. His place of origin may be either Mondaino in the province of Emilia Romagna or Mondaino in the Marches. Information from the Metropolitan Museum of Art indicates that the room comes from a refectory of an Augustine convent in the province of Recanati in the Marches.
