Condition
Pile ranges from 1/8in. to low to knothead with light browns oxidized to foundation and knothead. Some faded stains on reverse, probably from Tibetan red felt tape. Remnants of original flatwoven ends; now fraying and with some losses but with pile area intact. Remnants of original selvages; now with fraying and some losses. Very fine weave, supple handle, very good condition for age.

The unusual design of this chair back, where a horse stands in waves with a 'cloud balloon' emanating from its saddle is similar to that on a rug sold in these rooms, 8 December 1990, lot 99, which depicts a qilin in waves with a 'balloon' coming from of its mouth, see Herrmann, Eberhart, Asiastiche Teppich- und Textilkunst, Vol. 3, Munich, 1991, pl. 79 and "Auction Price Guide," Hali, no. 55, p. 167.
