Artist's inscription:
My existence is like a boat in the sea; for months I shut myself in, not even combing my hair. Across my fence butterflies blithely come and go. Watching and painting chrysanthemums, I pass an autumn. I have made two other copies of this painting by Tianchi (Xu Wei, 1521-1593). One I gave to Chen Xiaoyu, the other to Dong Yipu. The present copy I shall keep for my own enjoyment. The ancients are remote and transcendent. How can we hope to reach them? And in talent and skill, how can I even compare to Master Tianchi? Such a strained imitation as mine - is it anything but recklessness on our part? On Mid-Autumn Festival in the jiachen year (1844), inscribed by Yanchong.
