Catalogue Note

Artist's inscription:
At the foot of the mountain, scattered mist around a distant village. At the edge of the sky, a lone tree on a high plain. Poem by Wang Youcheng (Wang Wei, 701-706). Painted by Xuanzai.

Colophon:
Outside the city where clouds gather, in front of the mountains stands an old grass hut. The owner's socializing and travels involve no commerce; his brush and ink carry the fragrance of the forest. The shade of fine bamboos is appropriate for wine. Fallen petals drift towards the bed. When can I retire and rest here, singing at length and leisurely wander? Inscribed on the order of Master Huiweng. Deng Xu.
