Catalogue Note

Zhu Yunming is acknowledged as one of the greatest calligraphers of the Ming dynasty. He was known for combining a deep knowledge of classical literature and respect for the calligraphic tradition, with an unbridled spirit and creative passion. The result is a unique calligraphic style that is highly original, yet informed by tradition.
In this handscroll, which is a fine example of his ability to reinvigorate classical texts, Zhu Yunming has transcribed an essay written by Ouyang Xiu (1007-1072), the famous statesman and essayist of the Song dynasty. In Ouyang's 'Record of the Daylight Embroidered Hall', he praises the character of the famous Eastern Han Dynasty General and Prime Minister, Cao Cao (155-220). Ouyang recalls reading a poem by Cao Cao from a stele that Cao inscribed at the 'Daylight Embroidered Hall' in Xiangzhou, where he was governor at the time. Ouyang ends his account, 'Although I have not had the chance to ascend to the "Daylight Embroidered Hall," I have been honored with the opportunity to privately read its poem aloud, and to realize and enjoy its high aims, and moreover take pleasure in retelling it to the world, thusly I write this account.'
