including a brushpot of irregular section, realistically carved as a gnarly weathered tree stump covered with burl and knots; and a cup in the outline of a prunus blossom, supported on flowering and budding branches that extend up the sides, a section of a branch forming the handle (2)

Provenance

Acquired in China in the 1960s, and thence by descent.

Condition

The brushpot has some minor nicks around the mouth rim and two approximately 1/2 in. (12 cm) sections where old chips may have been, but have now been polished to blend into the design. There is a lump of putty in the interior and traces of red pigment on the base. The water coupe with two minor nicks to the rim, several fine cracks, a small area of nicks to the top of the handle, and chips to the tips of six petals. The based marked in red pigment with the numbers 6-2.
