the interior of each dish similarly incised with a freely drawn spray of lotus flowers, with curling stems and leaves, covered overall with a creamy ivory-colored glaze, both with thin bands of metal around the rim left unglazed for firing (2)

Provenance

Acquired in Japan between 1947 and 1952 and thence by descent.

Condition

One dish has a 1/4 in. (0.6 cm) hairline crack running from rim edge, a 1/4 in. (0.6 cm) firing flaw and minor firing tear to the center. There are minor scattered iron spots and kiln grit to the interior and exterior. The base has a 1/4 in. (0.6 cm) burst air bubble. The other dish has an approximately 1/4 in. (0.6 cm) iron spot, two 1/4 in. (0.6 cm) chips and several smaller chips to the rim edge. There is a short hairline crack to the well. There are scattered minor iron spots to the interior. There are scattered minor burst air bubbles to the exterior. There is a minor bruise to the foot as well as kiln grit.
