Catalogue Note

It is very rare to find a black-glazed vase of this form and with this type of splashed decoration. A larger vase of very similar form with overall rust-brown splashes, from the Alfred Schoenlicht and later the Marianne Landau collection, sold in our London rooms, 13th December 1955, lot 20, was included in the exhibition, Song Chinese Ceramics: 10th to 13th Century, Eskenazi, London, 2003, cat. no. 7; while another vase is illustrated in Warren E. Cox, The Book of Pottery and Porcelain, vol. 1, New York, 1944, pl. 54 top left; and a smaller splashed vase of this type is published in Mayuyama: Seventy Years, Tokyo, 1976, pl. 563. Compare also one sold in our London rooms, 9th June 2004, lot 163; and another sold in these rooms, 7th February 1974, lot 156.
