Description

the deep rounded sides resting on a short foot and rising to an everted rim, painted around the sides in vibrant tones of underglaze blue with large lotus blossoms issuing from feathery scrolls, all above a band of overlapping petal tips, the interior painted in the center with a lotus bloom surrounded by further leaves and feathery scrolls, the sides decorated similarly to the exterior, all below a further lotus scroll band, six-character mark in underglaze blue within a double circle, wood stand (2)
Provenance
Collection of Dr. Richard and Mrs. Mary Eckhardt, acquired in Japan between 1947-1952 while Dr. Eckhardt was serving as a surgeon in the United States Army and thence by descent.
Condition
There are two chips to the exterior of the rim which have been restored with the Japanese technique of gilt-lacquer, and the blue decoration of the exterior rim has burned brown in one small area. There is some minor kiln grit to the foot rim.
