of globular form rising to a waisted neck with an everted rim, the exterior carved with three large and stylized phoenix, their wings in low relief outstretched and adjoined, their heads, bodies and talons in high relief facing outwards, the stone of a rich, grayish-green color with dark green striations, inscribed four-character Jiaqing mark with traces of gilt on the base

Provenance

Scottish Private Collection, purchased from Louis Lyons in 1980. Mr. Lyons left most of his collection to the Kelvin Grove Museum in Glasgow.

Condition

There are some tiny nicks to the exterior of the foot ring and some slight wear to the surface, otherwise the jar is in good condition.

Catalogue Note

This jar is a rare form and can be related to two Qianlong mark and period white jade examples in the Palace Museum Beijing, illustrated in Li Jiu-Fang, Chinese Jades, Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong, 1996, no. 68 and no. 69 (with its cover).  There is a green jade example of this form in the National Palace Museum in Taipei, illustrated in Masterworks of Chinese Jade in the National Palace Museum, Supplement, Taipei, 1973, no. 41, with a four-character Qianlong mark but dated to the Qing dynasty.
